How Much Money Do Tennis Players Make?

As my wife and I are watching Djokovic play Federer at the U.S. Open 2011 we’re Tennis Players Salarieswondering how much money do tennis players make? Or how much do tennis players make if they win a tournament? What about if they lose in the semifinals? We decided to do a little research. Here is what we found:

One Full Year:

Here are the official numbers from ESPN.com on some of the top players in the world:

Rafael Nadal’s Winnings

  • 2008- $6.7 million
  • 2009- $6.4 million
  • 2010- $7.7 million

Andy Roddick’s Winnings

  • 2008- $1.3 million
  • 2009- $2.4 million
  • 2010- $1.9 million

Serena Williams’ Winnings

  • 2008- $3.8 million
  • 2009- $6.5 million
  • 2010- $4.2 million

Winning a Major Tournament

Prize money for winning a major tournament is much higher than what we thought. It makes much more sense now why they are so happy when they win. It’s obviously not just about the win itself! Here is how much the winner(and losers) make for winning the 2011 U.S. Open from usopen.org:

  • Winners (1) – $1,800,000
  • Runners-Up (1) – $900,000
  • Semifinalists (2) – $450,000
  • Quarterfinalists (4) – $225,000
  • Round of 16 (8) – $110,000
  • Third Round (16) – $55,000
  • Second Round (32) – $31,000
  • First Round (64) – $19,000

Sponsorships

Tennis sponsorships make up the bulk of where tennis players make their money. While there isn’t a lot of information on it we were able to find some rough calculations:

  • Roger Federer- In 2009 made $26 Million from sponsorships.
  • Me- Roughly -$100 for paying for my USTA membership and buying my own equipment.

All in all the best tennis players make a boat load of money. After seeing how much they make doesn’t it make you want to quit your job and go pro? It does for me! What are your thoughts about how much tennis players are paid?
